The year is 1835 and almost-13-year-old mathematics whiz Patience Goodspeed wants to stay home on Nantucket and continue her studies.  Her father, a steely whaling captain, has other plans, however, and whisks Patience and her little brother Thaddeus off with him on a three-year voyage.  Life aboard the Morning Star is a trial for Patience, who would rather learn to navigate than play cook's apprentice.  When mutinous sailors maroon Captain Goodspeed, Thaddeus, and much of the crew on a deserted island, Patience sets sail for the challenge of a lifetime.  Can she rescue her family and shipmates before it's too late?
