Happiness in a cup

I admit it.

I’m a bit of a cocoa freak.

There’s nothing I love better than a good cup of hot chocolate!  Especially on a cold day like this one.  And especially when I’m writing.

My sister sent me the BEST PRESENT this week to cheer me up (I get a little cranky when I’m on deadline):  a kilo-sized bag of Callebaut cocoa.  Mmmm.  Bliss!  Especially when I froth the milk first, the way I did here (that’s foam, not whipped cream, believe it or not), and sprinkle it with a little cinnamon and nutmeg.

What’s your favorite hot drink?

    • Heather, who is going to be on the cover of “Wish you were Eyre”? All of the girls have been on covers. Are you going to start putting the boys or the moms on?

      • Sorry for asking so many questions but is the mdbc supposed to be a book like Mr. and Mrs.Hawthorn were debating about? A book that is to get you to read the originals. If it is it’s working all while making a book that one day will have it’s own book that will make you want to read it….is anybody lost cause i think I am and I wrote it, well I hope this makes scense to you. 🙂

    • There’s nothing like a cup of hot chocolate after playing in the snow. My sister always makes it extra special and puts chocolate shavings. There’s a coffee shop that makes mint hot chocolate it is so delicious. My family also makes the best home-made potatoe soup during the winter the only bad thing about it is that it always gets eaten up so fast.

    • Callebaut is VERY expensive and VERY wonderful Belgian chocolate. YUM! I like Mexican hot chocolate too sometimes, with cinnamon and a little sprinkling of cayenne pepper. Not too spicy, though.

        • It’s really weird! 🙂 it’s basically hot cocoa with chili powder and cinnamon. Ever since watching the TV show “once upon a time” I’ve been craving some! Even if it is weird! 😀

  1. ohhh, I like hot chocolate myself, with lots and lots of whip cream… You can never go wrong with whip cream!

  2. Oooooh, nice! My grandmother has this amazing hot chocolate maker with a frother…. (William and Sonoma… 🙂 ) It’s magnificent!!

My favorite hot drink is either hot chocolate or chai…

  3. ahhh there’s nothing like a nice warm cup of cocoa with wipped cream and nutmeg while your going through a stressful time. I know what it’s like when you have to get something done in time! But I love hot chocolate!

  4. I love hot chocolate with those mini marshmellows that melt before you have time to eat them. Then the hot chocolate tastes all nice and gooey and marshmellowey. It tastes so extremely warm and nice. It’s annoying when my tongue blisters because I’ve burned my tongue on the hot chocolate so much. HOT CHOCOLATE IS SOO YUMMY!:)

  5. I LOVE hot chocolate! I’m allergic to the regular kind but I drink chocolate soymilk and then heat it up then froth it. Sometimes I get carried away and froth ALL OF THE MILK!! 🙂

    • Oh! Oh Oh Oh! The local cafe/used book store (I love that place!)has something called a steamer, which is basically milkshake flavouring with steamed milk, and foam on top! Always served on a glass plate with a doily (it’s in a mug, of course)! That’s like heaven on a cold day!

  6. Hummmmmm(!!!!) CHOCOLATE!!!!! And they say dimonds are a girl’s best friend. 🙂 Chocolate over dimonds anyday.

  7. Woah, wait… Forget about the hot chocolate– Did you take that picture?! *Kinda obsessed with photography* 😀

  8. That looks amazing!!!! I love hot chocolate and coffee with lots of milk and sugar. However, my newest winter drink obsession is English wassail without the alcohol. My friends and I drank an entire pot full one night over Christmas break, while watching the Pride and Prejudice miniseries. Perfect night!!! 🙂

  9. Girls is white dresses with blue satin sashes, snow flakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, hot chocolate steming and brimming with cream…THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS. -insert the voice of Julia Andrews 🙂

  10. So, I was watching the Golden Globes last night, and I heard the name Colin Firth and was like, “Hey! That’s the guy who plays Mr. Darcy who Mrs. Hawthorne is obsessed with!” Then he walked onstage. Let’s just say I see what Mrs. Hawthorne is so gaga about. The tux doesn’t hurt, either. 😉
(The funny thing is, I can picture Darcy Hawthorne looking like that when he’s older!)

  11. Mine would probely be irish breakfast tea . Hot choclate would have to come in 2nd . By the way what is hot apple cider?

  12. I totes agree-nothing cheers me up more then a warm cup of hot chocolate! Just a cuppa! I was thinking, you should add Valentines Day into the now book. It was never mentioned before and it is my favorite holiday. (becides xmas of coarse!)

  13. Okay, I have a question for you, Mrs. Frederick, if you have the time. I’m looking for information on how to publish a book/how the publishing process works, but I honestly have no idea where to start. Do you know of any books or resources I could check out? Thanks a bunch!

    • Yes — check out the Writer’s Market (available at libraries and bookstores). They’re updated every year, and contain all sorts of helpful information about the publishing process, as well as detailed information on every publisher in the U.S. Another good resource is http://www.scbwi.org — society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. They have great info on how things work. Have fun!

      • Thanks a bunch! That’s really helpful. Also, Home For The Holidays is on hold for me at the library and I can’t wait to read it!

  14. I likes those Caramel Lattes at Starbucks! But, other than that I agree with you Heather. I don’t really enjoy coffee as much as I should. 🙂

  15. I love hot mint tea! It’s even better since it comes fresh from our garden! By the way when will “Wish you were Eyre” come out?

  16. Will you be going on a book tour again?! You should really come to New England… 😉 Maine especially 😉

  17. im waiting for the rest fo the series to come cuz my mum ordered them last week and says thay should come tomorrow cant wait .

oh and my mum is writing a book and has been for the past 2 years [i think its going to be really good but she says i cant read it till im older cuz its a gronup book] but we just got are stuff and just moved so lots of drama [ and i really miss my friends 🙁 ] so after all thats done she said she will only work on her book till its done and then hopes she ill get it published .

p.s were you really sad when you moved cuz i am and last time it wasn’t this bad

    • I’ve moved MANY times and it’s never easy — but it always gets better. All you need is ONE friend to get started feeling better, and my guess is that will happen soon… 🙂
