It’s here! It’s here! Audio MDBC & a giveaway

Looks familiar, doesn’t it? But can you spot what’s new?  Yup. Those two magical little words “READ BY.”

Produced by Ideal Audiobooks, this recording’s stellar cast includes Amy Rubinate, Cris Dukehart, Kate Rudd, and Emily Woo Zeller. I’m truly honored to have these four AMAZING voice actors playing the parts of Emma, Jess, Cassidy, and Megan! When you listen, I hope you’ll agree that they’ve beautifully captured the girls’ individual characters, which spring to life in a new way in their excellent hands … er, voices.

Stay tuned for an upcoming Q&A with each of these talented women.

Meanwhile, though, we need to celebrate, right?

  1. If I had to choose what book a mother-daughter book club should read, I would tell them to read Dear Pen Pal, because it is one of my favorite books.

  2. My favorite character is Emma because I can literally spend whole days on the couch just reading. I also like Megan because of her fashion sense and her family.

  3. Ah, this is such a tough decision, I’ve grown to love them all so much! I’d have to say Emma or Jess though, if I have to make a choice.

  4. I feel like this series would be a perfect mother daughter book club read, for obvious reasons 😉 It definitely shows that you don’t need to all be the same to come together as one, and would make a great read for any mother or daughter!

  5. My favorite character in the Mother-Daughter Book Club series…this is such a hard question! I love each and every one of the characters separately…I’m finding it terribly hard to choose just one! If I had to choose though, I think I’d probably pick Cassidy. Her boldness and sense of humor always make me laugh!

  6. My favorite character in the mother daughter book club series is Jess:) But Cassidy is a very close second!

  7. My favourite character is Emma because I feel like I can really relate to her; she’s always pushing for her friends to read certain books! If I were in a book club, I’d really have to say I’d like to start with Little Women because it happens to be my favourite classic novel.
I can’t wait to hear the cast of the audio book in action! Congratulations 🙂

  8. I always go back and forth on who is my favorite character because I love them all so much!! But normally it’s a tie between Cassidy and Jess!

  9. My favorite character is Cassidy!! She is my favorite because we are both athletic and she is such a well developed character!

  10. My favorite character is Cassidy, even though she’s nothing like me. I love how she doesn’t let anybody tell her what to do, and it’s always fun to read her “scores” at the end of her chapters.

  11. It’s Darcy for me… Jess is a close second! And I would have to stick with reading the Great Gatsby! Cannot wait for the audio books AND #7

  12. My favorite character is Cassidy because she is six foot tall just like me, athletic, and doesn’t let any push her or her friends around.

  13. Hello! My favorite character would happen to be Megan! I can relate to her so much. I know her struggles of not living up to her mother’s perfect daughter standards, but also want the mother to support in what we do and what we love! So relatable

  14. My favorite character is Jess. I’ve always had a deep admiration for Jess because she’s a really strong character. And she’s a great role model for young girls. Even though she worked on a farm and would get teased about it from Becca in the beginning, she stuck to her friends and family and let it go. Her family is one of her biggest priorites and she had to really step it up when her mom was in New York. She follows her passions singing and studies really hard and she refuses to ever let the mean girls get in the way of what’s most important to her. Also she has Darcy, which to be honest is just the cherry on top of the cake because he’s really sweet and cares about her. Overall Jess Is a really great role model and my favorite character in the series.

  15. Yay! I’m so excited. I’m going to answer both questions so, a) It would have to be either Emma or Cassidy because I’m almost exactly like Emma, but such a sporty tom boy like Cassidy. And for b)I would probably go with the entire MDBC series because it would just fit so perfectly. I really hope I win!! I’m really excited!!

  16. I relate to most of the girls. However, Emma and Cassidy are my favorite of the girls. I also really like Chloe and Courtney! I’m super excited for the audio books.

  17. I relate to most of the girls. However, Emma and Cassidy are my favorite of the girls. I also really like Chloe and Courtney! I’m super excited for the audio books.

  18. My favorite character is Cassidy, because I love how she’s so fierce and fiesty. She doesn’t let anything affect her, from people things say to when she gets hurt during hockey. I also like her competitiveness and how at the beginning she was the only girl on the all boy hockey team! She also has great humor and comebacks and sticks up for her friends and never backs down.

  19. My favorite character is Gigi. She is such a fun and spunky grandmother. She brings so much fun and excitement into the girls’ lives. And her love of Paris and fashion? Lets just say I wish she would take me on the trip she took Megan on.

  20. My favorite character was definitely Megan. Her chapters were always nice to read and she was just a good, well-rounded character in general.

  21. I like all of the girls but I’d have to say my favorite character is Emma. I’m such a bookworm and I also love to write and want to publish a novel that I am currently working on! When she talked about Betsy in “Home for the Holidays” and saying what she would do if she were with Betsy is the same thing I think about if I could really hang out with Emma. Though she’s a fictional character, she is a kindred spirit for sure! I love these books!

  22. My favorite character from MDBC has to be Jess. I can relate to all of the characters in some way, but I love Jess’s confidence and pride to what she does. If I were in a mother daughter book club I would probably choose the MDBC series because I feel like the girls would get a feel to how the club works and what kinds of fun things may be in store for them. ♥️

  23. I am in a book club with some of my friends right now, and we are reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr which is really interesting. Regardless, I was in a mother-daughter book club, the first book we would have to read would be the Mother-Daughter Book Club! After that, though, I would like to read either Princess Academy by Shannon Hale or The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen. These are some of my favorite books, and I’d love to share them.

    • I LOVED “All the Light We Cannot See”! (Adult book, by the way, for those of you who are reading these comments.) I also loved Princess Academy and The False Prince! 😉

  24. My favorite character is Jess because she has such a big heart. She is so smart and totally deserves her spot at colonial academy. I love that she loves horses and I love Half Moon Farm! It seems like such a nice and cozy place to be. Jess is such a good friend to Emma too! Jess is so lucky to have Darcy! I love the MDBC and I hope I win the Giveaway. Thank You Ms. Fredrick for being such an inspirational author!

  25. My favorite character is Jess. I like Jess because she knows she can do anything if she tries. Also, she is just very fun-loving! In the first book literally at the end of the first sentence I was like ‘I am totally gonna love this girl’. Well, I am in a mother daughter book club, and your first book was the first one we read. In the future I would love for us to read a book I can relate to. PS-I think that if you(Heather) think that I should win but you like another person’s too, I think you should pick the other person, because don’t get me wrong I would love to have an extra copy of my favorite series in the entire world for the rest of my life, but I know deep down inside, that there is a person who will enjoy it better than me. I hope the winner enjoys!

  26. HI! If i were in a mother daughter book club I would want everyone to read a book called Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It is absolutely WONDERFUL!
Also, I wanted to tell you that I used to read your blog a lot, and it really inspired me to write. I havent been on lately because I have been hard at work publishing my own book, called Dear Whoever. It was my dream to publish before I got out of High School, and here it is at age 16!! If you want to you can take a look, but I just wanted to say thanks for the blog because it helped me learn and follow my dream!!

    • Congratulations, Tatum! I’m on a deadline right now, but will pop over and take a look when I get a chance. 🙂

    • Wow!!! That’s amazing!!!! Pretty soon I’m gonna be publishing my book too! Congrats!!!!!!

    • Wow, congratulations Tatum! That is a huge accomplishment, and I’m so happy for you! I also saw on the Spilling Ink Creativity Blog that you also got an honourable mention for your submission to the Teen Short Story Contest, Girl on Mute. That’s so amazing!!! Congrats again and I hope all your writing wishes come true! 🙂

  27. All of the girls are my favorite, so I really can’t answer that question… As to the other, if I were in a mother-daughter book club, I would read either Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, or The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. They are both beautiful books.

  28. Congratulations on the audiobook Mrs. Fredrick! Choosing a favorite character is really hard because all of them are relatable characters with incredible depth, but I’d probably go with Jess. She reminds me a lot of myself, and I loved seeing her change from a shy, timid girl to the outgoing one she is by the last book.

  29. I love all the characters SO much, but I guess Cassidy is one of my favorites because she is such a layered character. She seems so real, especially when she’s dealing with change.

  30. Surprisingly, my favorite character is Becca, because she hasn’t found her true self, who she really is until…..9th grade, I think. All the time Becca was being mean to Emma, I think it was for laughs, and a cruel joke, but I think she did it because she was scared. Not that she realized it, but deep down, I think she was.

  31. My favorite character would have to be Megan’s grandma. She just sounds like someone I’d want to spend time with. If I were in a book club, I might read The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, because I would enjoy talking about the allusions to real life! (I know deep down I probably won’t win, so I offer my congratulations to the winner!)

  32. My favorite character is Cassidy. I love she’s always standing up for her friends but she still has a girly side. Me and my friends wish we were like her but that’s just not us but whatever.

  33. Hmm…. My favorite character is either Jess or Cassidy….. Can’t decide. I can compare to both of them tho! Jess because she’s shy and gentle…. And Cassidy cause she’s really tall…. Haha

  34. I’ve grown up with the MDBC girls, as the books were published when I was the same age as them. These books were instrumental to me because they portrayed girls in healthy friendships and family relationships when it was hard for me to find books that did. If I were in an amazing book club such as the one Emma, Jess, Megan, and Cassidy are in, I would want to read Madeleine L’Engle’s A Ring of Endless Light. It was another important book for me when I read it as a 12 year-old and again as a 17 year-old. The themes are incredibly profound and helped me through some difficult times in my life (and it was written by Madeleine L’Engle, so you can’t go wrong!)I would highly recommend it for ANY book club!

  35. Ehm…. I can’t even decide on a favorite character, but old have the Mother Daughter Book Clib would be, “In the Time of the Butterflies” by Julia Alavarez. I read that book this last year, and I have completely fallen in love with the Mirabal sisters.

  36. I absolutely love every single one of the girls from MDBC so it’s incredibly hard to choose just one. I look most forward to reading about Cassidy because of her spunk, and I love reading about Megan and Gigi’s conversations. I love Jess’s determination and Emma’s personality. I don’t think I can pick just one character because I have a connection to all of them. As for my favorite book, it would either have to be one of yours, “Salvaged” by Stefne Miller, or maybe one of the Twilight books! Thank you!!

  37. My favorite character would definitely be Cassidy. She’s so headstrong and doesn’t care what others think of her. I look up to her as a role model since she’s been through so much in her life, and has been able to surpass all her personal challenges while maintaining a busy lifestyle on the ice :). If I was in a book club, I would probably start with The Mother-Daughter Book Club series 🙂 since it is such a great set of books. I would also want to read A Tale of Two Cities. That is my all-time favorite book by Dickens, and the story is absolutely amazing!

  38. my favorite character from the mother daughter book club is Emma because me and her have a love for reading. also, jess because she and I likes to sing.

  39. My favorite character is Megan! I want to be some type of designer as well! Also paris is an amazing vacation spot! By the way what’s Heather’s email?

  40. Ooh I don’t know! I’d have to say Cassidy just because she’s like the exact opposite of me in some areas, but completely alike in other areas. She’s just so much fun to read in all of the books and I cannot WAIT for her and all the girls in Mother Daughter Book Camp!

  41. My favorite Mother-Daughter Book Club character is Emma Jane Hawthorne because we both have a lot in common. She is good at reading and writing just like me! She is also a good student like me. She had a great time traveling to Washington D.C and I am going to Washington D.C. pretty soon! She has curly dark brown hair and I have dark brown hair except it is not curly. She wore glasses and I like wearing cute and black fake glasses that look real.
Congratulations Mrs. Frederick for writing both Yours Truly and The Mother-Daughter Book Camp! I can’t wait to read them!!!
I would have a Mother-Daughter Book Club read The Betsy-Tacy series because it inspired me along with other books that talk about fulfilling your dreams to keep on writing and one day you just might have a shot on becoming a real life author which is what I want to be! Actually I want to write books as a hobby and become a lawyer because history is also interesting to me.

  42. My favorite character is definitely Jess. I don’t know why, but I’ve always felt an especial bond with hr, maybe because we’re both shy and could easily be friends with each other. 🙂

  43. my favorite character i would have to say is Emma or Jess.i am like Emma because i want to be an author when i grow up and i am not too good at math or science, and i like books.
I am like Jess because i like music and animals.I am also like her because i have long thick blonde hair. i am also very smart.
i could easily be friends with both of them i think because i know so much about them.

  44. My favorite character is definitely Cassidy- even though I identify most with Emma!
I’m a bookworm at heart, and I love to read and write. I was wondering, Heather- did you base any particular character on yourself? Emma’s love for reading and writing? Cassidy’s spirit and wry humor?
I love Cassidy’s spirit, and I wish I was more like her. She can do anything she sets her mind to, and as Jess says, she has yards of confidence! She’s nothing like me, and I think I like her for that reason too. With her flaming mane of red hair and freckles, she looks nothing like me, either!

  45. My favorite character is Emma because I feel like we relate to each other the most out of all the girls in the book club. We both want to become writers and we both have glasses. I love all the girls but Emma and I just have the most in common!

  46. If I had to choose a book for a mother-daughter book club that I was in, the book would be Absolutely Truly.

  47. I left a comment earlier this week, but I have to say this. Please write one more book of them in college! I don’t care what year of college it is. A couple years ago I read these books with my friends and we were hanging out when I left that past comment. And we all agreed we would read the last book as a group. Honestly I’ve always wondered about how Sophie and meghans relationship turned out. Or what all the girls studied in high school. What are their jobs going to be. Does becca end up with her mr Rochester?

  48. I shared this awesome news on Pinterest and my favourite character is Megan because she likes fashion like I do. I think we could be pretty good friends. (If she was real, that is)

  49. My favorite character, although I love all of the girls for different reasons, is Cassidy because I wish I had a friend like her who would always stick up for me no matter what happened and is a true friend inside and out. Also, I admire how she does not care what anyone thinks and is really good at sports, so she could help me get better. But most of all, I wish I had a incredibly awesome group of friends like she does.

  50. My favorite character is most certainly Emma! I’m almost exactly like her. Bookworm, bookworm, bookworm. I named all of my friends after MDBC characters, and guess who I got? I like Stewart a lot, too.

  51. Hi Ms. Frederick!! I just wanted to let you know that I have finally been able to get my hands on a copy of Absolutely Truly and I absolutely love it!! Truly is such an interesting character, and I am so intrigued with the story. I have a couple of questions though :). First, how do you come up with such amazing character names? I understand how you got Emma Hawthorne, Emma because of Jane Austen, and Hawthorne because Nathaniel Hawthorne was a famous writer, right? Emma inspired me to keep a writing journal of my own and so far, I’ve written down a lot of names, but none of them are as creative as Truly or Cha Cha :). Secondly, when Truly calls Scooter Metal Mouth, i was wondering if you got that insult from Cassidy insulting Becca because of her braces :). I was just thinking of that! You’re such an amazing writer, and I want to be just like you when I grow up. Also, thank you so much for creating a blog, I really enjoy reading all your posts!

    A reader,

    • Thanks, Kelly — I’m DELIGHTED that you enjoyed “Truly.” 🙂 Coming up with character names is one of my favorite parts of the writing process. Important part, too, because names have to completely fit a character. I keep lists of first names, last names etc. that I come across, and sometimes I consult baby name books or websites. And yeah, “metalmouth” has been around a LONG time as a silly insult — people were calling each other that back when I was in middle school! (The Jurassic era ha ha!) Thanks for being such an enthusiastic reader and fan, Kelly!

  52. My favorite character is defiantly Cassidy but Megan is a very close second. i love Cassidy because of her spunk.she has a backbone. And I LOVE her and Tristan!!! If I could have her over to my house I totally would. Also I would like to thank HVF for her books. They inspire me!!!

  53. My favorite character is Clementine Sloane-Kinkaid because she is so kind and all the girls love her as do the moms.

  54. It’s hard to say who my favorite MDBC character is, I find all of them fascinating and interesting in their own ways. I feel like each one of tem is somehow a piece of my own personality. However, I would most likely say that it’s a tie between Emma and Jess. I am absolutely as crazy about books, writing, and poetry as Emma. Plus I can absolutely connect with Jess over her younger brothers, and having a love of animals and the outdoors.

But as a side-note I would have to say that if I could have the MDBC read a book, than it would have to be Emma or Sense and Sensibility.

  55. I absolutely adored once upon a toad! Also I most relate to Megan. Anyways I just reread the whole MDBC series!:( Mrs bergsons death was so sad! Anyways I love you Heather! You’re the best writer in the US as far as I’m concerned. Also I was reading the comments and I’m so pysched about the new book! Enjoy fall Heather!

    • Why thank you, Julianna! Your warm words of praise just made my day! Happy fall to you, too! 😀

  56. My favorite character is Jess Delaney. She loves animals and is so sweet and caring. Out of all the charaters except Emma, she is the quietest one. I also have to say that the MDBC is my favorite series of all time and you’re my favorite author ever!!!!
